Dear Rec members, friends, and supporters:

We are sad to share the news that the Rec will not open for the summer 2020 season. We have been working closely with our board, Chagrin Schools, and our community to try to find a path to a safe summer fun experience at the Rec this summer but we could not. Aside from the health and safety of our community – which is always our first priority – our decision was predicated on three key factors:

1. Chagrin Falls school grounds are closed to the public until at least June 30 per the department of health. There is some lack of clarity both from and within the health department as to whether this includes the Rec Center grounds (which are 100% school property) – but we, as we understand it today, Rec grounds cannot be open to the public until July 1 at the earliest.

2. Even if we opened for July and August, we would not be able to generate enough revenue from member dues to cover our expenses. While we have done some maintenance work at the pool this spring we still have about $8,000 in startup costs that are currently deferred. With no June swimming and no swim team or camps, we have no way to generate enough income to cover the cost of opening and running the pools.

3. Governor DeWine’s pool distancing requirements significantly impact the number of swimmers and guests that can be on the pool deck at one time. Pools and clubs that are opening under these guidelines will have to limit memberships and be prepared to turn away guests regularly when they are at capacity.

We will miss everything about the Rec this summer – from the first early June splash in a freezing Big Pool to seeing our newest members toddle around our Baby Pool to watching our grownup members enjoy poolside time in the summer sun with friends. We will miss watching kids eat endless popsicles at the snack bar and shoot hoops on our blacktop and run across the football field and straight to the diving board on a hot July afternoon. The Rec is summer for so many of us. We will miss it – and you – so much.

If you have already joined the Rec for summer 2020: We will begin processing refunds early next week. Some of you have already asked if you might donate all or part of your dues to the Rec – this offer brings a tear to our eyes. Thank you.  If you have any questions regarding refunds, please email cvrcdirector@gmail.com.

Without a 2020 season, we will bring in no little to no income in 2020. Obviously, our expenses will be greatly reduced without a pool to operate. However, we still need to maintain fixed expenses like building maintenance, insurance, utilities, and the employment of our hard-working director who works year-round on behalf of the Rec. As we work out a plan for remaining solvent this year so we may open in 2021, we are asking all of our Rec families, alumni, friends, and Chagrin Falls community members to consider a gift to support the Rec during this challenging season. Are you able to help us with a gift that reflects your love for one of Chagrin Falls’ beloved institutions?

You may make gifts on our website at https://www.chagrinrec.com/donate/ or by mailing a check to Chagrin Rec Center, 400 East Washington St., Chagrin Falls, Ohio 44022. Gifts of $100 or more will be recognized on a banner to be hung at the Rec next summer when we can all safely be together again.

We wish you all a happy and healthy summer and thank you – from the bottom of our hearts – for being supporters of our Rec.

The Board of the Chagrin Valley Recreation Center
